Many elephants worked in the timber industry, but that industry has practically vanished in Thailand so the trained elephants and their mahouts are mostly unemployed. Some now take tourists on rides. These are "Indian" elephants, smaller than their African relatives. In olden days they were the pride of many Asian kingdoms. The King of Thailand still has a herd and there are still a few wild elephants in Thai jungles. |
